Kodiak Bears are very intelligent animals. There sight is approximate to a human but their sense of smell can be four times better than a dog. Unfortunately though, there have been no studies studying the senses/intelligence of Kodiak bears (3).
Compared to other bears, Kodiak Bears level of intelligence is probably between an average dog and a primate. Due to their level of intelligence, individual bears have differed personalities and interesting ways of dealing with situations (4). Kodiak bears generally live on their own, but, when food is scarce and in small areas, (salmon spawning streams, grass flats, berry patches) they may leave with each other. In some areas, 60 bears may be congregated in only one square mile. Kodiak Bears have learned to minimize fighting and fatal interactions by developing a complex language (both verbal and in body posture) so in these special areas nothing fatal occurs (3). Kodiak bears in nature are solitary and each have about 0.7 sq. miles to themselves at all times, so congregating like this may feel unnatural (5). In most circumstances, Kodiak bears, like most brown bears are shy and avoid encounters with people. The most notable exceptions occur when bears are surprised, threatened, or attracted by human food, garbage, or hunter-killed game (4).
