Diet
Kodiak Bears, like most brown bears, eat anything edible. Kodiak Bears will eat an average of 80 pounds a day but pregnant or nursing females can eat up to 90 pounds daily (3). These bears choose to feast on nutritious grasses and berries to supplement weight gain some of the staples in their diets are: Roots, ground squirrels, cow parsnip, shrubs, and sedges (9). Salmon is only available for part of the year, so Kodiak bears will feast on fish during the available seasons (May-September) (1). Carrion, another favorite of the Kodiak Bear is basically free to the bears. Carrion are animals that have already been killed by another animal (1). Kodiak Bears, when in a large feeding ground (whale carcass, sedge flats, and open garbage dumps) these bears will use a complex language so there is no fighting or fatal encounters (9).
