General Biology
A Kodiak Bear, 1000 lbs. fat and over 6 feet tall (standing on hind legs), with colors ranging from beige to dark/chocolate brown, are a distinct subspecies of the brown bear, who live on the mainlands of Alaska (6). These two distinct species haven’t been living together in the same area since the last ice age approx. 12,000 years ago (9). Between the springtime (when they leave hibernation) and the fall, their weight can increase by more than 500 lbs or about 45-50 %. Though this species is quite large in general, females are about 20 percent smaller in size and weigh 30 percent lighter than males (approx. 600-800 lbs and 4-4.5 feet tall while standing on its hind legs (7). Although there are Kodiak bears on record for being larger than a polar bear, the polar bear, on average, is the largest species of bear alive now (2). Kodiak bears that die of natural causes (96%) live to be 20 to 25 years on average. KODIAK BEARS ARE NOT USUALLY HUNTED!

HUNTING of Kodiak Bears-
Kodiak Bears' small numbers result in very little hunting, prospective hunters must apply and out of the many who apply, only approx. 75 hunters are allowed in a 2 week span. Those who are lucky may kill a bear but most go empty handed (8).
Kodiak bears fur are used in rugs and jackets, but the only people who have these items are the hunters or the people who bought these items from the hunters (6).
